Drawing by working with tone, often smudged to keep it even, is often the most efficient. But building up hatching can often be more eloquent about the surface being described. I always feel that a hatched drawing is almost endlessly workable, whereas smudging eventually reaches an impasse. Hatching requires considerable patience and a lot of sharp pencils!
