I painted this beautiful South American model at the Back Loft in La Catedrale Studios (hence the title). The light was very flat, her skin is quite dark and the background was very light, so she looked like a silhouette. I found that I could make the modelling of her form work by reacting to all the colours in her skin with an exaggerated response, so that she is modelled more through hue than tone. I like the way this worked, both the colours I was able to find in as colours themselves and the way that these colours realise the volumes.
